Black Americans in Recovery: Addressing Racial Challenges in Addiction Treatment

Date: February 16, 2023
Time: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Location: Virtual

The impact of substance and alcohol use disorders on Black Americans is a complex issue. Understanding it requires an examination of racial inequity, inequality, and racism. Research shows long-held stereotypes about race and addiction are impacting access to treatment and patient outcomes. It is critical for the behavioral health community to discuss these differences.

Join Jacole Spriggs, BrightView Health’s Chief Nursing Officer, as she leads a discussion that identifies the key components of this issue to improve recovery outcomes for all patients.

Attendees will learn how:
• Black American drug and alcohol usage trends vary across age and sex;
• Bias and stigma affect treatment access and patient outcomes;
• Systemic racism and trauma contribute to treatment disparities between races;
• Understanding this complex issue can impact recovery outcomes.

This forum includes an open discussion where attendees can ask questions of our presenters.
